How to Drain a Water Heater

Most homeowners don’t think about their water heater until something goes wrong. However, annual maintenance—like draining the tank—helps remove sediment buildup, improving efficiency and preventing clogs throughout your home.

Check the Pressure-Relief Valve

Start by turning off power to the water heater. Open the pressure-relief valve and listen for air while watching for water flow. If both are present, the valve is functioning properly. If not, replace it before continuing.

Run the Drain Line

Attach a garden hose to the drain valve and run it outside or to a safe drainage area. If your water heater is in a basement, you may need a pump to move water upward. Allow the water to cool before draining to avoid burns—running a hot shower beforehand can help speed up cooling.

Flush Your Tank

Once the tank has drained, open all hot water faucets and turn the water supply back on. This helps flush out remaining sediment. Let the water run until it appears clear, then close the drain valve and turn off the faucets.

Finish Up

Turn off the water supply again if needed, close the drain valve securely, and restore the cold water supply. Reset the pressure-relief valve and turn the power back on. Your water heater is now clean and operating more efficiently.

Regularly draining your water heater helps extend its lifespan, improve performance, and maintain consistent hot water throughout your home.
