Preparing To Replace A Toilet

Replacing a toilet can be a straightforward DIY project, but it often requires preparation to avoid multiple trips to the hardware store. By gathering the right tools and parts ahead of time, you can complete the job efficiently and with confidence.

Essential Parts

Before starting, purchase a new supply line and consider replacing the shut-off valve if it’s old or faulty. Most new toilets include key components such as closet bolts, a wax ring, tank gasket, fill valve, flush valve, and flapper. Double-check the packaging to ensure nothing is missing.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Large flathead screwdriver
  • Channel-locking pliers
  • Wrenches
  • Putty knife
  • Rags
  • Teflon tape

Optional (But Helpful) Supplies

Depending on your setup, you may need additional items like jumbo wax rings for recessed flanges, flange repair rings or extenders for damaged connections, and a mini hacksaw for cutting rusted bolts.

Step-by-Step Installation

1. Assemble the New Toilet

Unbox and assemble the toilet by installing the fill valve and flush valve. Attach the tank to the base using the provided bolts, tightening carefully to avoid cracking the porcelain.

2. Remove the Old Toilet

Turn off the water supply and flush to empty the tank. Disconnect the supply line and remove nuts from the closet bolts. If corroded, cut them off. Lift the toilet straight up from the base.

3. Prepare the Flange

Insert a rag into the soil pipe to block sewer gases. Clean off old wax and debris using a putty knife. Inspect and repair the flange if needed using a repair ring or extender.

4. Install the New Toilet

Place the wax ring on the flange and position the closet bolts. Carefully lower the toilet onto the flange, aligning the bolts with the base holes. Tighten nuts evenly on both sides to compress the wax ring securely.

Tip: Always lift the toilet by the base, not the tank, to avoid damaging the porcelain.

5. Connect Water Supply

Attach the supply line using Teflon tape on threaded connections. Turn the water back on, allow the tank to fill, and check for leaks. Flush several times and inspect around the base and connections, tightening fittings if necessary.

With proper preparation and careful installation, replacing a toilet can be completed in just a few hours, improving both function and efficiency in your bathroom.
